If your family is in the mood for a bit of a drive to the Gulf, you might consider the Fort Island Gulf Beach. Visiting this area is free of charge.
Our family tried to avoid the red tide in the Gulf. We did some research and followed the information on Mote's Beach Conditions Reporting. Driving from Winter Garden, during a weekend morning it took us no more than a 1.5-hour drive. We arrived at a free and ample parking area. Should you arrive in the afternoon you might have to park on the side of the road, so I would recommend getting there in the morning time.
The beach site itself is a nice, spacious sandy beach, that includes bathrooms, covered picnic tables, and outdoor showers. You can also find a grassy area on the south side of the beach.
If you’re into fishing or sightseeing you will want to take a stroll along the boardwalk and the pier. Boat owners will enjoy finding a free boat ramp.
This past weekend our family settled for a simple picnic at the beach. We enjoyed the calm, and shallow waters, that invite even the most water-timid people. I highly recommend this area if you have a child with disabilities that fears deep water, or have a child who is just learning how to swim.
Brig your sand toys, and floating toys, and you will have tons of fun. If you’re doing an impromptu trip, your love for the water-splashing games will do just as well.
Do not forget items:
- Sandals/slides for when you’re visiting the bathrooms
- Sunblock
- Sanitizer (especially when visiting the bathrooms
- Hydrating foods: pre-cut fruits and veggies (watermelon, honeydew, cucumbers,...), fruit pouches, yogurts…
- Plenty of refreshing drinks (we kept it simple with plenty of water)
- Beach toys
Pros:
- Free of charge
- Easy access
- Family-friendly
- Calm, shallow water
- Bathrooms
- Outdoor Showers
- Lifeguard present on duty (from Memorial Day through Labor Day)
- No dogs allowed
Cons:
