Meet Mr. Andre - The Balloon Artist

By Michelle Holly, Publisher and Editor of Macaroni KID Winter Garden-Ocoee November 1, 2023

You may have seen Mr. Andre's balloon creations around town! I had the amazing honor to see him work his magic at my daughter's birthday party! He is funny, great with kids, and super creative. If you have a theme, he will research ideas to fit in with your celebration. While kids are in line, he knows how to entertain and make them laugh! He even made a toy-type of balloon that became a hit and quickly got other kids back in line for a second balloon. He worked hard from start to finish. When I asked several of my daughter's friends their favorite part of the party, they unanimously said the balloon artist! (Mind you, I had non-stop activities planned the whole three hours - but that just shows you how amazing Mr. Andre is!)

I also had the opportunity to learn more about Mr. Andre. Here, he answers questions about how he became a balloon artist, how he created some media-worthy balloons, and how he was encouraged to be creative as a young boy!

Will you share how you started in balloon creations and what inspired you to do this for your career?

It all started when my young nephew and niece from Canada were about to visit. Instead of buying them more toys, I had a fun idea: I filled our house with balloons. I learned how to make simple balloon creations like swords and dogs, and I taught the kids. What happened next was pure magic—a massive and incredibly fun balloon party!

Balloons have always fascinated kids, but the joy they brought to our gathering was something else. That experience made a lasting impression on me. It was then that I decided to explore the world of balloon art further. I began by taking up balloon twisting as a hobby, dedicating time to practice and create unique designs.

Eventually, I realized that I could turn my love for creativity into a source of happiness for others. That's when I decided to make balloon art my profession.

What type of training/preparation did you need?

To become a balloon twister, I embarked on a path of training and preparation that involved several key components:

  1. Self-Study: Initially, I began by self-studying balloon twisting techniques through books, online tutorials, and instructional videos.
  2. Workshops and Classes: To enhance my skills and learn more advanced techniques, I attended workshops and classes conducted by experienced balloon artists. These in-person and online sessions provided invaluable hands-on experience, allowing me to refine my twisting abilities and expand my repertoire of balloon creations.
  3. Practice: Practice is essential for developing balloon twisting skills. I dedicated countless hours to practice, experimenting with different twists and shapes until I achieved proficiency. Continuous practice is still a fundamental part of my routine to maintain and improve my skills.
  4. Networking: Building connections with other balloon artists has been crucial for my growth. Networking within the balloon art community has allowed me to exchange ideas, learn from others' experiences, and stay updated on industry trends and innovations.
  5. Vitamins: Lots of vitamins D (discipline) and B (believing in yourself)  ; )

How do you learn new creations to make?

I learn new balloon creations through a combination of methods:

  1. Online Resources: I explore online tutorials and social media for inspiration and techniques.
  2. Workshops and Networking: Attending workshops and connecting with fellow balloon artists helps me learn and share ideas.
  3. Books and Experimentation: I use books and experimentation to discover unique designs.
  4. Industry Events: I attend industry events for exposure to new trends and techniques.
  5. Client Requests: Ohhh here we go!!  All these methods help me stay prepared for unique client requests that can sometimes feel like they're from another world! By the way, have you ever heard of Lickitung from Pokemon or Mr. Toilet from Roblox?

On your site, you offer a variety of balloon experiences. I'm curious about the balloon workshop. Can you tell us more about that?

Absolutely! Balloon twisting workshops designed for kids are not only interactive and bursting with color but also incredibly entertaining. During these workshops, children get hands-on experience crafting 4-5 basic balloon shapes, which they can proudly take home as keepsakes. These workshops are a big hit at birthday parties and also make a fantastic addition to school and church events, injecting an element of creativity and fun into any occasion. I take great pleasure in providing this service. It’s a vibrant, photogenic, and highly memorable experience that kids absolutely love!

I've seen you share when you're at restaurants and events. Do you have a set schedule or should we just follow your social media?

I'm glad you've noticed! I typically share updates about my restaurant and event appearances on my social media. While I don't have a fixed schedule, following me on social media is the best way to stay informed about my upcoming appearances and events. Feel free to follow me to keep up-to-date with my latest activities.

What is the most detailed balloon you have done?

Creating balloon caricatures of people's faces is always a challenging and detailed task, but it's something I truly enjoy. Making larger-than-life balloon caricatures of individuals often results in surprising reactions (and plenty of questions!). Recently, I had the privilege of crafting a balloon caricature of Emmanuel Carter, the host of a highly popular streaming kids' show, which was featured on a special 'Hot Balloon' episode. Additionally, I had the honor of creating a balloon caricature of our beloved Sheriff Grady Judd.

What balloon creation took you the longest time to make?

One memorable creation that comes to mind is a larger-than-life wearable turkey costume I made for my wife to wear during the Turkey Trot 5K in Orlando in 2019. It took me 7 hours to build. It was not only big, but also eye-catching. To our delight, we ended up winning the best costume challenge and even got interviewed by a local TV station. It was a rewarding and fun experience that definitely paid off.

As a child, what sorts of activities were you involved in that helped pave this career path?

As a kid, I just naturally gravitated towards stuff that let me be creative and artistic. When people asked what I'd be when I grew up, they were usually pretty surprised when I said 'an illustrator.' Back then, I used to doodle over cartoon books with paper transfers to figure out the technique. I also messed around with embroidery kits, painted stuff, silk-screened, and a variety of other crafts.. Those were the things I loved doing, and I believe they set me on the path to where I am now.

What advice do you have for parents who have children who may be interested in art/party services like yours?

My advice for parents whose children are interested in art or party services like mine would be:

  • Encourage exploration of various creative activities.
  • Keep art supplies accessible.
  • Consider local art classes.
  • Show genuine support and display their creations.
  • Promote creativity and risk-taking.
  • Let them take ownership of their artistic journey.
  • Embrace mistakes as part of learning.
  • Create a supportive environment.
  • Explore related workshops and events.
  • Cultivate patience and long-term growth.

Ultimately, the key is to nurture your child's passion, provide them with opportunities for growth and learning, and offer unwavering support as they explore their creative interest.
